Ganoderma coffee is a coffee blend that's been mixed with extract from the red reishi mushroom, ganoderma lucidum. This mushroom has been used in Chinese medicine for over two millennium. The Chinese name for the mushroom is lingzhi. This name actually means "miraculous or divine mushroom." The red reishi is a woody, polypore mushroom that grows in brackets on trees in hemlock forests, though it can also be cultivated both indoors and outdoors.

The reishi mushroom is known as a very powerful immune system stimulant and is particularly effective in fighting degenerative diseases like cancer and AIDS. It seems to be protective against cancer by slowing or stopping the creation of blood vessels that would nourish the tumor and help it spread. It also stimulates T-cell activity and helps to inhibit the HIV virus from replicating.
Reishi mushrooms also seem to keep platelets from dangerously sticking together in arteries, which can lead to hardening of the arteries, strokes and heart attacks. Reishi mushrooms have also been shown to lower levels of cholesterol and blood pressure and to control blood sugar, something that's crucial for people suffering from diabetes.
People who drink ganoderma coffee claim that it has other healthful properties, like increasing the flow of oxygen in the body and promoting an overall sense of well being. The mushroom extract, which has an intensely bitter taste, is not just mixed with coffee but with tea and cocoa. Users claim reishi has no side effects and is completely safe to use, though some people suffer from what they interpret as side effects. Nutritionists believe these side effects, which seem to worsen the conditions the person is taking the product for, are actually part of a healing crisis, or the "law of cure." This is because the body starts to eliminate toxins during the first few days of taking a therapy like ganoderma coffee. After a few days of this, the person will begin to feel better. If the process is intensely uncomfortable, they can cut their consumption of ganoderma coffee in half.

Steep like tea or brew like coffee. Any way you do it, you'll be getting a tasty and healthy caffeine-free beverage!
Add 1 tablespoon for every 1 cup of pure water, and boil about 5-10 minutes. Strain and drink. Straining is optional, as the grounds will be soft and are edible. The longer it boils, the stronger it gets. Serve with milk or cream, or soymilk, rice milk, almond milk, or coconut milk.
This also works well, and produces a deep flavored cup. Use from 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of Roast per cup (8 ounces) of water.
Pour boiling water into a coffee/tea press, and add the Roast. Then let sit for 5-10 minutes, depending on the strength desired.
Grind the Ayurvedic Roast in a coffee grinder, and then you're ready for the espresso machine!
Pour hot water into a cup containing 1-3 teaspoons (based on desired strength), and let sit for 3-5 minutes. The grounds will get soft, and can be eaten, as they are the barley, rye, and chicory root. Healthy!

After being told that caffeine was significantly bad for us over 40's, and that decaf had bad effects on cholesterol, I decided to try the herbal coffee route. My wife and I have tried the 'other' herbal coffee and Ayurvedic Roast. We both enjoyed the slightly stronger coffee flavor and definitely less sweet flavor of the Ayurvedic Roast. It smells better out of the bag as well as during the brew process. It was easy to make in our drip coffee maker, and maintained flavor even when cold (yes, I drink cold coffee after hours of sitting around). While I have become hooked on the flavor of coffee, this substitute is sufficient to fool me with its own unique, in a good way, flavor.Bob Flanagan
